About the Role

Caldera is hiring a Tech Assistant (Junior Developer) to join our engineering team and help build and maintain the software that powers our hospitality and services products across Africa.

This role suits someone who writes clean TypeScript, learns quickly, and is comfortable working in a small, fast-moving team. Prior exposure to Caldera — through an internship, contract work, or a technical contribution — is a strong plus, but not essential if you can demonstrate solid fundamentals and curiosity.

You will work on real production systems: fixing issues, implementing features, and improving reliability for live users. This is a hands-on role, not shadowing — you will ship meaningful work under guidance from senior engineers.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic

  • Feature Development
  • Build and improve product features across our web applications using TypeScript and modern frontend patterns
  • Implement and maintain server-side logic and HTTP APIs
  • Work with relational databases and data models as part of day-to-day development
  • Bug Fixes & Maintenance
  • Investigate and resolve issues reported through support channels and internal QA
  • Add tests for important behaviour and participate in code review
  • Team Collaboration
  • Work across product areas as needed, following established engineering standards and documentation
  • Ask clear questions, document what you learn, and communicate progress openly
  • Documentation & Quality
  • Keep technical notes, runbooks, and handover material up to date
  • Help improve developer workflows and internal tooling where you see opportunity
  • Learning & Growth
  • Learn our codebase, release process, and product domains on the job
  • Take part in technical discussions and grow toward greater ownership over time

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • TypeScript Proficiency
  • Confident writing typed TypeScript — you understand interfaces, async code, and how to read existing modules before changing them
  • Modern Web Development
  • Experience building web applications with a mainstream JavaScript framework and component-based UI
  • Comfortable working with HTTP APIs and basic database concepts
  • Git & Collaboration
  • Familiar with version control, feature branches, pull requests, and constructive code review
  • Problem‑Solving Mindset
  • Able to trace issues through an unfamiliar codebase and propose sensible fixes
  • Resourceful when blocked, but willing to escalate early when needed
  • Early‑Career or Career‑Switcher (0–2 years)
  • Recent graduate, bootcamp graduate, or self‑taught developer with demonstrable projects
  • A portfolio or public code samples is strongly preferred
  • Lagos‑Based
  • Available for on‑site work in Lagos; occasional remote flexibility for focused deep‑work days
